Could u please help pls update with PS3?

My brother just bought a PS3 and it is totally clueless .. He wanted to sign for PlayStation Network, "which implies that i is necessary for cats, downloads and stuffs. When clicked, it said: "update is needed." I was very afraid to make an update. Well, we have set up internet connection parameter and I suppose that's connected. idk .. lol. Currently, the PS3 version 2.52. Somehow, when we clicked and reached agreement section. He says, its goin to upgrade to version 1.02. I click, but when I read a comment on youtube, it says that the update causes loads of problems. Is it safe? What should we do?? We want to rock on Resistance 2! and play online .. Help pleaseeee

It is safe. Why Sony release an updated software which would cause problems? And even if it did, I'm sure they release a new software to correct all the problems created the other one.
